A family business that Dale Marquis (now chairman) started some 40 years ago, today the company-in conjunction with its original real estate and private equity arm Invest West Financial Corp.-boasts a portfolio of nearly $1 billion in real estate assets. Hotel-wise, that equates to managing 34 hotels (29 of which they own), mostly independents on the California coastline, with properties each in Florida and Hawaii. It truly became a family affair when Marquis' sons, Matt and Adam, joined the company in 1997 and 2010, respectively. Since then Matt (the president and CEO) and Adam (executive vice president)-along with Pacifica's vice president of design, development, and construction Daniel Hyde-have taken a 184 May 2016 critical eye to the company's portfolio, raising the bar on both experience and design. Recent openings of note include the Wayfarer in Santa Barbara, a boutique hotel-meets-hostel concept, and the Carlyle Inn, an Art Deco conversion in Beverly Hills. And that's just the beginning. On the docket there's a property in downtown Los Angeles, renovations of several existing hotels, and San Simeon Pines, a 60-room former motel on an eight-acre site in Cambria, California that could be the future home of rustic-chic yurts. The trio sat down at LA's the Line hotel to discuss family history, a mom and pop expansion plan, and water cooler talk gone digital. Matt, tell us about when you first joined the family business. Matt Marquis: I went from Wall Street and Park Avenue [at Bahrain-based Investcorp] to the basement in Santa Barbara [as asset manager of the commercial real estate portfolio in 1997]. Dad said, 'He's talented, but we can't show any favoritism.' He then split off from his partners and we started rebuilding. We went through a couple of other executives that we brought in to 2
