perspectives sketchbook le grand > "Very chic, elegant, and French-like a Parisian woman." That was the design directive Gulla Jonsdottir, principal of Los Angeles-based Gulla Jonsdottir Architecture + Design, received from French chef JeanFrançois Piège for his Le Grand Restaurant in Paris. When revamping this one-time deli into a space that "broke some boundaries," Jonsdottir envisioned such a glamorous woman "traveling through the restaurant from noon to night." First, she would enter through a thick cast-bronze door depicting a map of Paris with the River Seine as its handle, crafted by the same artisans responsible for the metal work at Versailles. Once in the kitchen, "she would have her lunch with a glass of wine from the adjacent cellar," Jonsdottir explains. "Then I saw her entering the jewellike dining room, discreet and elegant with only 11 tables, to host her guests under a 3D tricolored glass ceiling resembling her jewelry. Her night would end by drinking champagne in the private dining room with the folded wood ceiling lit by exquisite Baccarat lights." While the bronze-laced door and sculptural faceted glass ceiling- echoed by the handmade carpet below flaunting the same pattern-are highlights, so are the large swaths of black and white marble. Covering both the open kitchen and curved wall that transitions to the dining room, Jonsdottir says it reminds her of a Japanese brush and ink Sumi-e painting, "a white piece of paper with one powerful black Sumi-e stroke."
