For each issue, we have grand plans of what we hope to include-always

trying to get the best content for the topic at hand. Sometimes everything seems to
fall into place, and this-our annual look at restaurants-is one such issue.
Restaurants, both casual and fine dining, are two of our most popular categories
for our HD Awards, and for this issue, that rang true again: We were sent and
tracked down more amazing eateries than we could fit in our pages. It was hard to
narrow down, which is why we tried to fit in as many as we could, resulting in what
we think is an impressive global roundup of some of the highlights of our findings-
some 23 in 19 cities, plus a deeper dive into three
standouts. We celebrate not only the design, but
the creatives behind the ideas.
Besides the impressive looks, we wanted
to showcase some of the great chefs and
restaurateurs who are responsible for the
remarkable food and concepts-after all,
restaurants are a true team effort. We were
honored to interview a few greats and an up and
comer whom we have respected and admired
from afar-Marcus Samuelsson, Mike Isabella,
Marc Murphy, Andrew Carmellini, Daniela
Soto-Innes, and the founders of Major Food
Group (an interview I worked for six months
to secure). And talk about teamwork, our
managing editor Katie Kervin sat down with designer Adam D. Tihany and chef
Thomas Keller, longtime collaborators who are taking their newest concept to the
seas.
Serendipitously, chef Tom Colicchio is also included in these pages, as he is one
of the six hospitality veterans to be honored at our Platinum Circle Awards Gala,
November 15th at the Marriott Marquis in New York (hdplatinumcircle.com). He
will join an impressive group of other industry luminaries who have earned our
career achievement award (our highest honor), along with Kit and Tim Kemp of
Firmdale Hotels and John Ceriale of Prospect Hotel Advisors/Blackstone Group.
We will also celebrate Jeffrey Beers International for 30 years of innovation, and
Clodagh for her tireless humanitarian work for the Thorn Tree Project. We hope
you can join us for what will be an unforgettable evening.
As I said, sometimes everything just falls into place.
