I just returned from the annual Americas

Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS) in California,
where the mood was optimistic, but cautious. The
good news is most thought the hotel industry would
see small percentage increases in 2019 (in terms of
RevPAR, supply, and demand) and into 2020, but
what happens next year is still a bit of a wild card.
It was quite fitting considering I came back from
Los Angeles to our annual development issue. This
year, we decided to approach the topic by looking at
a baker's dozen of places we think are noteworthy.
(Trust me, it was hard to narrow it down to just 13.)
From Kuala Lumpur to Tulum and Chicago, we set
the stage and then dive into a few standout projects
defining the recent activity, those that speak to their locale. It's a great mix of styles and
space types from veteran designers and rising stars alike.
We also sat down with Avi Brosh, founder of Paligroup, a collection of hyper-local
hotels, to find out how he is trying to disrupt the status quo. In addition, we look at four
properties that are beacons of their neighborhoods. No matter if they are in Jackson Hole,
Wyoming or Downtown LA, they have figured out a way to feel like a truly original respite.
We did many things at HD last year, but one of my favorite moments was launching
our new conference Elevate. With the blurring of lines between hospitality and other
disciplines, and vice versa, it was a day that celebrated the best of design across all genres-
wellness, sustainability, theater, hospitality, commercial, retail, and residential. Sometimes
when we plan our conferences, all the stars align, and everyone we ask to speak says yes,
and this was one such special day. In our recap, we share three takeaways from each of
the nine inspirational speakers, starting on page 121. A big thank you to our sponsors:

Speaking of the stars aligning, I am excited to announce our keynote speaker for HD

Talk about authentic experiences; that is the backbone of what they do. As he said in an
interview for HD's July 2017 issue, "Our whole DNA is to not have a box. We spend a lot of
time finding [people who] weave together a great story and then we let them do their own
