How can we advance women leadership?

I see this as three-fold effort through mentorship, industry changes, and
Who are you and what have you done?
With more than 25 years of experience, I have enjoyed myriad
opportunities that have contributed to my project management and design
approach, but it wasn't until I began working in healthcare that I found
my calling. I have the opportunity to play a major role in the creation
of healing environments daily, which is something that fulfills me both
personally and professionally. My previous experience working as an
architect and owner's representative has provided me with a well-rounded
perspective of healthcare design, allowing me to be effective in my current
role as Stantec's Chicago Health Sector Leader.
How did your earlier career choices lead you to where you are
now?
It was by chance that I ended up in healthcare architecture. I did not
have a healthcare portfolio when I transitioned to a firm with a growing
healthcare practice and need for architecture support after winning a
large contract with a university medical center. At first, I was hesitant to
dive into an unfamiliar market, but I quickly found where I belonged. The
technical aspect of healthcare gave me insight into the continued growth
female support networks. I believe it is my duty to lift up and provide
guidance to the next generation of female leaders in this male-dominated
industry. Further, I believe the field of architecture should provide more
opportunities for the recognition and promotion of women into leadership
roles. Lastly, women need to support each other. In my experience, women's
networking groups have proven to be a valuable space to discuss current
trends, issues, and success stories.
What will be the biggest challenge for the generation of women
behind you?
When I graduated from college, I joined a small architecture firm
where I was the only woman, so women holding leadership roles was
almost unheard of for me. While we have seen the number of women in
architecture firms increase, I believe the greatest challenge for the next
generation is finding female role models and mentors. I have seen many
young female architects devalue and underestimate their abilities and
strengths, which has led me to aspire to create a positive change in this
mentality and inspire others to always reach for their dreams.
