Q&A with
Mary Lindeman
AIA, EDAC, LEED AP, CSSGB, Principal

Who are you and what have you done?
As the principal of Health + Wellness at CDH
in Marietta, Georgia, I have spent the last
22 years of my career focused exclusively on
healthcare projects. I have overseen everything
from the small, one-room equipment exchange
to full replacement hospitals and campus
master plans. Over the years, I have learned
a great deal through incredible partnerships
with clients, and I take pride in maintaining
those relationships and becoming a trusted
resource. I have the opportunity to work with
a number of health systems and an incredibly
talented team of architects and designers who
inspire me every day.

What advice would you give to your
younger self at the start of your career?
Don't downplay your achievements. As women,
we often equate being humble and modest with
being silent. It's important to remember that you
can be both humble and proud of what you have
accomplished. Nothing I do is entirely by myself,
so it is important to acknowledge your team and
to ensure that each person feels like a valued
contributor. You deserve to sit at the table with
your team. You deserve to be happy when you win
an award or when your client compliments your
service. Keep grinding-you're going to go far!

How did your earlier career choices lead you to where
you are now?
My undergraduate degree was in marketing. As an entry level
marketing executive, I was introduced to construction, project
management, and real estate. These opportunities were instrumental
in my development because although I had no idea of where I wanted
to be, I realized my role as a marketing executive was not it. After
meeting with a career counselor, I decided to enter a seven-year
program in architecture. The curriculum was in the evening with a
co-op opportunity in the day. By the time I graduated, I not only had
experience but also I knew it was the right field for me.
What have been some of your greatest lessons learned?
To move forward, you need to realize the importance of history and
experience. Look back and move forward while recognizing what
you have learned. Don't be afraid of change, sometimes that's the only
way to get what is right for you. Say 'yes' to as many opportunities as
you can early in your career; it's amazing to see how both you and
your career can grow. To be truly successful, one must take the best
experiences and leave the rest.
