With baby boomers poised to transform the healthcare industry, a number of design and construction
projects across the country are working on addressing the facility needs emerging as this generation
ages. Here's a roundup of the latest long-term living
and post-acute care projects in the news:
Crescent Park Senior Living: Spectrum
Retirement LLC (Denver) has begun construction
on its newest senior living community in Eugene,
Colo. The 116,000-square-foot, three-story building will include 119 senior apartments ranging in
size from studio suites to two-bedroom, two-bath,
1,000-square-foot units. A variety of health and wellness programs will also be on hand for residents,
as well as a European-style bistro and an elegant
restaurant.
Hospice House: Pen Bay Medical Center held a
groundbreaking ceremony for a 10,000-square-foot
hospice facility on the Pen Bay campus (Rockport,
Maine). The design is based on a New England farmstead with a "big house, little house, back house,
barn" configuration. The houses will be connected by
glass-enclosed passageways surrounding two large
courtyards with four-season gardens. The project is
pursuing LEED certification and will use a geothermal
system for heating and cooling.
T. Boone Pickens Hospice and Palliative
Care Center: Presbyterian Communities and
Services is kicking off construction on a $54 million,
100,000-square-foot facility in Dallas. The hospice
and palliative care center will be located on more
than nine acres and include 36 inpatient care suites
and four family or guest suites, a sanctuary and chapel, an outdoor reflection center, and a bereavement
center. The project is expected to be completed in
September 2015.
OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home:
Located in Peoria, Ill., this 23,000-square-foot facility
opened in January 2013 and features 16 patient
rooms, a chapel, and common spaces for patients,

family, and friends. The Prairie-style building design
features an interior color palette of warm greens,
blues, and rust oranges to echo views of the outdoors. Natural light is abundant in each room and
interiors are unified through the use of warm wood
tones and stone.
