The spacious lobby houses a bambooframed reception area, complete with
porcelain floor tiles and inset carpet. 
Intimate seating areas feature soft lighting
and an audiovisual art installation by artist
Brian Eno, titled "77 Million Paintings for
Montefiore."
The hospital houses eight exam and
two chemotherapy treatment rooms,
a day surgery unit, three laminar flow
theaters, and an endoscopy suite. The
21 private patient rooms have a boutique
hotel-like interior and en-suite bathrooms.
A palette of materials visually signals public, private, and circulation spaces. For example, in the lobby, chalk white walls are
balanced with gray and magenta feature
walls that echo Montefiore's branding,
while a warm bronze color frames the
elevator on the ground floor. In contrast,
consultation rooms use softer colors to
help reduce anxiety.
One of the project's design challenges
involved working more natural light into
the facility. In the operating rooms, this
was solved by adding ceiling-mounted
skylights, while in the patient rooms,
large, semicircular windows offer a view
over the street or of the courtyard below,

depending on the orientation. A new
stairway in the courtyard faces due
west and includes fire lobbies, located
between the main circulation areas and
the fire stairs, which are composed of
fire-rated glass and allow daylight to carry
into central circulation areas, as well.
An unusual construction technique
was used to level the first and second
floors and eliminate the existing internal
stairs and ramps. The process involved
placing 3-foot-deep polystyrene blocks
on top of the existing timber floors before
new concrete slabs were cast on top.
The timber floor and polystyrene were
then demolished from beneath. In doing
this, traditional back propping down to
the basement was eliminated and time
was saved.
Additional plans call for adding a rooftop hospitality area with a "beached raft"
theme that uses rope-bound logs sitting
on a bed of stones. HCD
