Double vision
The U.S. Air Force is undergoing
two separate clinic projects
for bases in the Southeast, using
a similar approach to planning,
design, and construction at
each site

Warner Robins Air Force
Base near Macon, Ga., and
Seymour Johnson Air Force
Base in Goldsboro, N.C.
Two buildings on the
Warner Robins base will be
renovated and connected
to form a 71,000-squarefoot ambulatory care
center designed around a
medical mall concept. Wide
corridors and clear sight
lines support wayfinding by
making each major department easily seen from the
building's entry.
At the same time, the
Seymour Johnson project
will provide that base with
a 107,000-square-foot
replacement for its existing
50-year-old building. The
$60 million clinic will house
18 service lines. A noteworthy design element at the Seymour Johnson site is a green
roof that provides plantings for year-round
color.
Under a design-build contract with
Heery International, the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers is pursuing project delivery at
both sites that relies heavily on Lean design
and an integrated approach. For example,
stakeholders at both sites were brought into
the planning process early, from architects
and engineers to administrators and front-line
staffers, to clearly define project goals from
the start. Lean approaches include the creation of flexible spaces that support efficient
delivery of care. The team is striving for LEED

for Healthcare Silver certification on the
two projects, as well.
Slated for completion in late 2016, the
projects also contracted initial outfitting
and transition planning services to ensure
the buildings will be ready to serve patients as soon as their doors open, with
furniture, fixtures, and equipment in place
as well as plenty of tongue depressors
and other necessary supplies. HCD
