For example, the facing on
the reception desk is largeformat porcelain tile with a
stone imprint that resembles
white matte marble. A wood
countertop keeps patient
security and registration devices out of site and
reduces clutter, while curved pieces of stainless
steel serve as a visual cue directing patients to each
transaction area.
To reduce anxiety, glazed doors are used between
the patient waiting areas and clinical corridors, with
most of the corridors ending with views to the outside.
The tailored details extend from the public waiting
spaces to the clinical and staff spaces. Exam rooms
feature wood-clad doors, abstract artwork, and color
accent walls. To reduce the clinical feel of the space,
Shaw says he pared down medical accessories and
recessed storage cabinets and counters into the wall
to reduce the visual impact.
"These subtle details and the accretion of them
really add up to a different type of environment," he
says. HCD

from clothing boutiques and VIP
lounges.

The new 250-bed Mercy Health West Hospital
replaces and consolidates two aging facilities
on the west side of Cincinnati. Jurors appreciated the project's strong contextual design
concept that's carried throughout the building.
The patient rooms feature pops of color, natural materials, and dedicated family spaces,
while the expansive windows provide views to
the largest green roof in Ohio and the natural landscape

Opaque forms, translucent elements, and
thoughtful daylighting create a tranquil environment inside Legacy ER's new Allen, Texas,
facility. Frameless skylights are situated at intersections in the corridors to form a sensorial
wayfinding system within the 8,432-squarefoot building. Jurors appreciated the simple
and elegant environment with "spaces that
played to the geometry of the forms." (For
