Sam Moses
Superintendent, Balfour
Beatty Construction (Dallas)
Who he is: Moses has spent the
majority of his 37-year career with
Balfour Beatty Construction as a
superintendent on projects from the
east to west coast, including several
hospitals. However, at 2 million
square feet, the new Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas became his
largest and most complex hospital
project to date. For the past four
years, Moses has served as general superintendent on the project, leading
a team of 21 superintendents from the four companies composing the

shot taken in October 2012 and the top in November 2014.

BARA joint venture charged with building the largest hospital construction
project in the country: Balfour Beatty, Austin Commercial, H.J. Russell &
Co., and Azteca Enterprises. Moses supervised all field activities and coordinated with subcontractors, working closely with
the owner and design team throughout the project
that tallied almost 7 million man-hours.
Year in review: Relying on off-site prefabrication where possible (including 800 bathroom
pods for the hospital's inpatient rooms) and Lean
scheduling methodology to streamline progress,
as well as a team-based approach and positive
safety-training culture for all those working on the
site, Parkland hit two big construction milestones
in 2014. The first was completion of the massive
structure, followed by receiving certificate of occupancy from the city and the Texas Department
of State Health Services. Moses and his team also
went on to complete site work and landscaping by
year-end, with a workforce that was once 1,400
workers dropping to under 200 as those finishing
touches were made.
What's next: Moses is among the last team
members winding down the Parkland project,
which is anticipated to open in August once a bridge between the existing
site and the new hospital is completed. Today, the staff has begun transitioning to the new space, as Moses finalizes details and starts to address
change orders. And when that's a wrap, he looks forward to taking on a
new project in Dallas.-JKS
