There's been a lot of exciting activity in Australian healthcare building recently. Lady Cilento
Children's Hospital (page 22) is just one example; check out HCDmagazine.com/australia for more
good design Down Under. But other nations have been busy, as well, and new projects cross our
desks regularly. Here's a look at some of the work happening across the pond (U.K.) and across the
border (Canada).
Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre,
Harrogate, England
INFINITE 3D ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY
The Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre is an outpatient oncology center that provides consulting,
treatment, and patient support in a standalone
facility at Harrogate District Hospital. Designed by
IBI Group (Sussex, England), the project opened in
October 2014.
The completed facility takes the form of two
"pebbles," and the oval shape of each building
avoids long, linear corridors while helping to provide identity and a sense of place for the center's
key functions. The first unit houses consulting, examination, therapies, and information areas on the
first floor and administrative spaces on a smaller
second level. The waiting area and surrounding
clinical and treatment spaces are arranged so
they can be isolated and used for support groups,
meetings, and other activities during evenings and
on the weekends.
The second building is accessible via a glazed
bridge and houses chemotherapy and support
spaces arranged around a large treatment area,
which can be subdivided to cater to patient needs.
A healing garden at the heart of each pebble
is designed to inspire calmness and provide
distraction during long and repeated treatment
procedures, while offering opportunities to escape
from the clinical environment and get a breath of
