To ease the burden for patients that often comes
with multiple visits to multiple clinics and physicians during cancer treatment, the new Cancer
Centre at Guy's Hospital in London will instead
provide a more streamlined option.
Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation
Trust tasked Stantec, Rogers Stirk Harbour
+ Partners, Arup, and Laing O'Rourke with
the challenge of unifying research, patient
care, and other oncology services within a
conservative building footprint in the city's
London Bridge Quarter. The solution was to
go up, organizing the facility by creating "villages" stacked in the building's 14 stories and
193,750 square feet.
The Welcome Village is a two-story lobby
space from which patients and visitors can
navigate to the other three villages: Radiotherapy
Village, Chemotherapy Village & King's College
London Research, and Outpatients Village.
The three radiation floors house an aboveground treatment area, a first in the United Kingdom, bringing daylight into the space and offering
patients views to nature. For chemotherapy,
patients can choose between private or shared
areas for treatment in a space that's aligned with
a dedicated research floor. Finally, outpatient
care is provided in a one-stop-shop setting for
imaging, minor procedures, and diagnostics and
treatment.
The village design also allows for more collaboration among staff, with clinicians provided
dedicated common areas, changing rooms, and
atriums to allow interactions among those who
currently work in different locations. To that end,
the site includes an open floor plan and no closed
offices. The building is scheduled to open in
