Below: This 12-story, 930,000-square-foot hospital sat in Birmingham, Ala., as an unfinished shell after its construction was halted in 2003. It was eventually purchased in 2008 to serve as the future home of the new Grandview Medical Center, which opened in October 2015. Right: The exterior skin was already complete on the shuttered hospital and includes a curtain wall system that makes up the entire north façade. This façade faces the main thoroughfare U.S. 280, which-along with the development surrounding the highway-served as a major selling point for Grandview's site selection. Attached to the hospital is a 1 million-square-foot parking garage that connects to a professional office building. Back 40 HCDmagazine.com 03.16http://www.HCDmagazine.com
