THE HIGH-STRESS, high-stakes world of healthcare D puts rigorous demands on its buildings, something our industry knows intimately. The team nature of meeting those demands through design is why we created The HCD 10 awards in 2012: to honor individuals (and one organization) who have made a significant mark on the healthcare design landscape in that particular year. ¶ This year's winners-culled from nominations that came in from across the country and from our own observations and interviews throughout 2015 and early 2016-really demonstrate just how punishing the demands on healthcare buildings can be, and how important different perspectives are to finding the best solutions. It's not just the rapidly changing face of healthcare itself, with the push toward more ambulatory facilities and wellnessfocused programs. It's also rebuilding from the ground up after earth-shattering devastation. It's dealing with ever-increasing demands for technological advancement and somehow having the infrastructure in place to accommodate a future we can't see. It's designing spaces to care for ultra-vulnerable young patients in the face of new epidemics like the recent Ebola crisis. ¶ The winners of this year's HCD 10 awards tackled all these issues and more, and we are pleased and honored to introduce you to them on the following pages. We will recognize them in person at our first Healthcare Design Forum being held this month in Santa Rosa, Calif., and during the Healthcare Design Expo & Conference, Nov. 12-15 in Houston. -Kristin D.
