COMMACK, N.Y.
In 2002, Memorial
Sloan Kettering
Cancer Center
(MSKCC) opened
its first freestanding
ambulatory cancer
care center in
Commack, New
York. EwingCole
designed this
original 50,000
square foot, twostory building
offering outpatient
services that include
cancer screening,
diagnostic
imaging, radiation
oncology, surgical
consultation, and

educational and
support programs.
Due to its success,
ten years later,
MSKCC needed to
expand the center
to better serve
patients living
in Long Island.
The new, threestory addition
was designed to
create uplifting
and encouraging
experiences.
To achieve this,
the following
design principles
were followed in
creating the spaces

for cancer care:
* Contact with
Nature, Sun and
Sky
* Short Travel
Paths
* Simplicity of
Navigation
* Offer Control of
Choices
* Acoustic
Tranquility
* Hide Medical
Artifacts.

Hospital for Children
Critical Care Tower
is a four-story,
135,000-squarefoot, tower addition
that is in line with
the hospital's
commitment to
providing highquality pediatric
care.
The exterior
includes a new main
entrance concourse
and canopies and a
pedestrian bridge
connecting the
tower to the existing
parking.

One of the
unique aspects of
the main lobby is
the installation of
a hot air balloon
mosaic comprised
of 180,000

act as wayfinding
elements.
The walls are
adorned with
custom digital
graphics showcasing
Philadelphia

include the shapes
of boats, butterflies,
and swans. These
