Getting buy-in for improving patient experience
may be easier to achieve than you think

WE'VE ALL HEARD that patient experience is a grow-

ing priority for healthcare organizations, and the
results of Healthcare Design's 2018 A/E/C Survey,
published in the April issue, only confirmed the
trend. Fifty-five percent of our respondents (architecture/engineering and construction firms working in healthcare design) reported "improving
patient experience/satisfaction" as the most common client goal behind projects in 2017, with 60 percent flagging it as a secondary goal.
And although improving experience is on plenty
of organizations' radars, achieving the buy-in of leadership to invest in it isn't
always easy, as Roberto Seif and Joel Worthington of HDR explain in their
column on page 43. The authors lay out a business case, though, presenting
financial incentives for investing in experience design that aren't as obvious
as investing in, say, equipment or technology. The ability to provide a financial
payoff is key-because while many agree experience is important, the chief
financial officers and facilities managers of the world may see more value in
allocating funding elsewhere.
With this in mind, I recently stopped by an event in my hometown of
Cleveland, hosted by the Corporate Realty, Design & Management Institute, a partner organization of the IFMA Healthcare Institute, not really anticipating that I'd hear much on the experience front in a program created
for facilities folks.
The content of sessions did cover the usual suspects like building codes and
compliance, air filtering, sound masking, roofing, and building controls. But
then there was talk about really innovative ideas like the Internet of Things
(IoT) and how it could be integrated into a hospital's lighting system, for example. This could provide practical solutions like asset tracking, predictive
maintenance, and security-pretty standard concerns. But what about indoor
satellite GPS so that patients and visitors can navigate within a building from
their phones or the ability for patients to dim or change the color of patient
room lighting with a swipe of their tablet? That's pure experience.
It occurred to me that experience can mean a lot of things. It doesn't always
have to be a hospitality-inspired lobby with a high-end coffee shop and retail.
It can be small details integrated into the building systems already in place.
It can be sound-masking speakers required for privacy that have the ability
to play music, too. It can be an app that patients download to change the TV
channels in their room.
There's a lot we can do to improve experience, and the best ROI is achieving
it through investments being made anyway. Perhaps the conversation about
designing for experience can be a lot easier than we thought. 
