RESILIENCE
PLANNING
Humans, especially
those working in healthcare, are capable of
remarkable achievements. However,
humans are also prone
to error, response
inconsistency, burnout,

and flawed situational
judgment. This is
especially true during
unpredictable and/or
stressful events, which
we know are common
occurrences in healthcare settings. Anticipatory planning, adaptive
design, and extensible
environmental systems
that account not
only for "known-unknowns" but for
"unknown-unknowns"
are essential for
high-performance
healthcare design.
Research supports the
idea that for a system
to be truly "resilient"
it needs to have both
well-tuned, competent
human operators and
well-designed systems
that support the ability
of human stakeholders
to consistently perform
at their best.

FINDING A
(RE)PURPOSE
Many opportunities lie
in thinking more creatively about the range
of buildings, which often
vary in age and merit,
that large organizations can accumulate.
Recycling is a powerful
HCDMAGAZINE.COM
force for good at every
scale-including whole
buildings-and we often
find ourselves exploring the line between
what's fit for purpose
and what can be usefully
repurposed. Alongside
efficient new buildings,
we must also reinvent
existing ones in creative
ways to give them a
sustainable future. One
example is our new
Cleveland Clinic Children's outpatient hospital that will soon inhabit
a reworked building on
our main campus. It's
intriguing to carefully
add and subtract from
an existing structure
to make it better than
the original and bring
others to perceive and

Incorporating the arts
into healing environments can involve more
than paintings and
sculptures. Studies show
that music can trigger
the brain to release
chemicals that distract
the body from pain, and
researchers also have
found that the emotions
