DESIGN CHAMPIONS
WHO LET THE DOGS IN?
HURLEY HOSPITAL'S burn unit in Flint,
Mich., got an updated look from man's
best friend-22 Weimaraners, to be
exact. RxArt, a nonprofit organization
that commissions installations from
contemporary artists for healthcare
facilities, worked with photographer
William Wegman to install his canine
creations in the unit, including images
of puppies aligning one corridor.
Adult dogs sitting atop Eames chairs
are featured in the waiting room, and
images of dogs perched on cubes help
patients and family members pass time
near the elevators. A dye sublimation
process was used to print the images
onto aluminum to withstand the hospital's
rigorous cleaning procedures, ensuring
the puppy love can be enjoyed for years
to come.-AD

HEALTHCARE DESIGN 'S sister magazine, Environments for Aging, which serves professionals involved in the planning, design, and construction of
senior living communities, is accepting nominations for its annual Design Champions awards. The
program recognizes individuals who are advancing
the design of senior living environments and implementing design solutions that make a meaningful
improvement in the lives of residents, staff, or the
greater community.
Nominations must detail candidates' contributions to the design of senior living environments
within the past two years, with related work in
settings such as skilled nursing, assisted living,
memory care, short-term rehabilitation, hospice,
independent living, and 55+ housing. Senior-specific solutions for acute and post-acute care facilities
will also be considered.
Winners will be announced in the Summer 2019
issue of EFA and honored at the 2020 Environments for Aging Expo & Conference. The deadline
