HARTFORD
& Joint Institute integrates all elements of
orthopedic and musculoskeletal treatment for Hartford
Hospital, including advanced diagnostics, rehabilitation, rheumatology,
neurology, neurosurgery, and pain management-all with the goal of becoming the
preferred provider of musculoskeletal care in
the region. It was designed by Perkins+Will (New
York; site, exterior, lobby) and HDR (New York and
Princeton, N.J.; medical planning, lobby, interiors,
landscape). Opened in late 2016, the institute includes a surgical center with 10 inpatient and outpatient ORs, 60 inpatient beds, diagnostic imaging
services, orthopedic urgent care, and a rehabilitation clinic. A two-story, light-filled entry lobby
with a small café and comfortable seating creates
a welcoming point of arrival, while a pedestrian
bridge links the institute to a separate ambulatory
care pavilion across the street. That connection
establishes seamless access to orthopedic, rheumatology, and neuroscience resources as well as a
dramatic gateway to the medical campus. The interiors are finished with clean, modern details while
tying to the Hartford brand through the use of elegant materials such as terrazzo and dark wood. All
public spaces are placed along the building perimeter, providing patients and families with natural
light and views and reinforcing an intuitive wayfinding approach.
