Hospitality shouldn't just inspire healthcare
design. It should be part of its DNA

THE TREND of hospitality inspiring healthcare

design was big news about five years or so ago.
In fact, it was probably the most notable design
trend to surface following the headline-grabbing
days of private patient rooms, access to nature,
and introduction of natural light. But I'm ready
to say that the "hospitality trend" is over.
It's not that hospitality has gone anywhere.
Rather, I contend that it's simply a baseline expectation for any healthcare project. Hospitals
should be hospitable. We now operate in the
era of patient satisfaction, and if you're building a hospital or any other
healthcare facility today, you'd better make sure that woven into the
building's fabric is a thread of hotel service, amenities, and aesthetics.
I explored this stance a bit on the Healthcare Interior Design 2.0
podcast, hosted by healthcare interior designer Cheryl Janis and sponsored by Porcelanosa. HCD Publisher Kristin D. Zeit and I were guests on
the show (give it a listen at http://healthcareidpodcast.com). From my
perspective, I told Janis, hospitality has become an inherent component
of what defines healthcare design today.
Successful new facilities will have open lobbies with a variety of seating options where patients and family members can easily seek privacy or
communal seating, plug in and get some work done, or grab a coffee or a
quick bite to eat. Patient rooms should provide control over settings for
lighting, music, and window coverings, as well as storage for belongings
and seating options for guests. Services might include a concierge kiosk
on the ground floor or made-to-order food delivery.
And if you think of recent projects-your own or those featured in this
magazine-elements like these were surely present somewhere and are
unmistakably rooted in hospitality.
I'll actually be moderating a panel on this topic at HD Expo, a conference and trade show dedicated to hospitality design and affiliated with
our sister magazine Hospitality Design (the show and magazine are owned
and operated by our parent company, Emerald Expositions). I'll be sitting down with a great group: Mary Frazier, principal at EwingCole; Suzen
Heeley, executive director, design and construction at Memorial Sloan
Kettering Cancer Center; and Lionel Ohayon, founder and CEO of ICrave.
Together, we'll dive into the forces at play that are inspiring hospitality
solutions for the patient experience and how it's no longer an option to
pursue them or not. Stay tuned on that.
