wood look, brightly colored fabrics, and soothing
paint colors, to bring in a more residential vibe
that can add a sense of calm. It's also important,
she says, to address acoustics , especially in the
more open settings where sound transmission
and privacy can become an issue. Design
solutions can range from sound-absorbing
materials in the ceilings or wall panels to
acoustical ceiling clouds and light fixtures that
can also add visual interest. "There are a lot
more opportunities today," she says.

Innovative Space Use

ZGF designed a
highly flexible office
space for Seattle
Children's technology
team at its downtown
Seattle building
that provides open,
daylit workstations,
conference rooms
of various sizes,
enclaves for
interactive and
collaborative work,
and designated
huddle spaces.

Seattle Children's had
experienced a decade
of rapid clinical growth,
putting administrative
and clinical support
spaces at a premium.
"We were in a space
crisis where we were
adding providers and
didn't have any empty
space or open offices
to add them," says
Mandy Hansen, director
of facilities planning,
design, and construction
at Seattle Children's in
Seattle.
In 2017, the hospital
began working with ZGF
(Seattle) to develop an
administrative master
plan to understand how
its space was being used,
current versus future
supply and demand, and
options for expansion.
The goal was to decant
some administrative
spaces "to alleviate
some of the pressure
on campus," says Sara
Howell, project manager
and associate principal
at ZGF.
After the data was
collected and analyzed,
the organization not only

found that it was over
capacity but that its
administrative spaces
ranged in size, from 45
to 250 square feet per
person, depending on
the department. "There
was great inequality in
the way space was being used and assigned,"
Howell says.
To begin solving this
problem, the hospital
developed guidelines
for work space design.
It also began looking at
adjacency requirements
and what departments
should or needed to stay
together, prioritizing
if it made sense for a
department to remain
on campus or move to a
satellite location. Then
the organization went
to work, renovating or
moving its administrative spaces first before
addressing clinical
support spaces.
Hansen says one
of the changes was
applying ergonomic
workstations across all
spaces that allow staff
to stand up as much as
possible and provide

adjustability for users.
The organization is also
moving to an activitybased setup, which
includes assigned
workstations as well as
focus rooms and huddle
spaces for quiet work,
private conversations,
or small group meetings.
While there's been
some pusback from clinicians on the change,
she stresses that the
new environment is designed to better foster
collaboration and team
work. Additionally,
Hansen says it allows
providers to stay on the
main campus and be
closer to their clinical
work, as opposed
to needing to move
off-campus, where
the organization is
adding administrative
space. "It's important
for them to know we're
not taking away their
ability to sit in a closed
room and focus and do
their work," she says.
"We're just saying they
don't have ownership
over that space."- A D

DOUG J. SCOTT

Designers say the next step in improving work
space planning and design is using new technologies to analyze how space is actually being
used, so there's data backing up the importance of staff areas. For example, Mazzi says
a lot of times she'll hear employees say they
need a large conference room that fits their
entire staff for meetings. "However, a conference room sized for that maximum 30 people,
that is underutilized and empty 50 percent of
the day ... it's easy for that space to get taken
away as the clinic grows and they need more
space," she says. "If you rightsize the space,
you won't lose that critical function within the
department." 
