NeoCon in Chicago, I met Lori
Roop, design director for CF Stinson. I was visiting the company's showroom at The Mart, and
she was kind enough to walk me through its new
Chiaroscuro Collection. She spoke of the inspiration behind it, explaining that the term itself
describes the treatment of light and dark, strong
contrasts, etc. It was a fascinating look at how something like a moody black and white photo might
spark the inspiration for a whole product line.
I love those conversations and feel fortunate
when I run into the right person at the right time and get to have them.
Editorially, we maintain a strict separation between our journalistically
driven content and mentions of vendors, manufacturers, or product names-
exceptions being our regular Product Spotlight departments, coverage of
product awards competitions, previews of our Healthcare Design Expo &
Conference trade show, etc. There's an important reason for that: We never
want readers to misconstrue our mission, to question the integrity of our content, or to feel that we're selling them something.
However-and this is an important point-that does not mean that we
don't value the individuals and companies that create the myriad products
required to support healthcare environments. In fact, every one of us should
be paying attention to what they have to say. Vendors and manufacturers are
on the front lines when it comes to answering the complex and varying needs
of healthcare providers and designers, all with speed to market and project
schedules driving design and execution.
It's a fascinating process, and we stand to learn a lot by understanding the
challenges they're working to solve. That's part of why we introduced this
first-ever Product Issue: to create a platform where we're crystal clear that
this time, editorially, we're going to talk product and hear from those who are
getting it right.
And when we decided to include Q+A profiles of product designers, I immediately thought of Lori and others I've had the pleasure to meet over the years.
They're individuals who have taught me about the creative process and what
inspires it, the treacherous path from first ideation to mass production, and
the feeling of seeing a piece installed in a healthcare environment and realizing the difference it can make. You'll find their stories beginning on page 18.
I hope you enjoy the issue. I'm already thinking about next year and how we
can continue to build upon the topic of product design and explore the intricacies of yet another creative discipline that exists here in our healthcare
design universe. 
