Emory Healthcare has selected SageGlass, a Saint-Gobain company, as a key partner
for its smart building design of the new Emory Musculoskeletal Institute. Smart
buildings leverage technology to maximize both occupant comfort and the building's
efficiency. SageGlass windows tint dynamically in response to external conditions and
occupant preferences, creating comfortable spaces that don't require blinds or shades.
This means patients, families, and staff members can enjoy a greater connection to the
outdoors.
The Emory Musculoskeletal Institute in
Brookhaven, Georgia, will showcase Emory
Healthcare's commitment to developing
buildings that promote health - not only with
world-class patient care, but through design
ingenuity. The newest addition to Emory's
Executive Park health innovation district,
this LEED-certified building will be a patientcentric facility providing orthopedics and spine
care, physical therapy, imaging, and ambulatory
surgery. The 180,000-square-foot building will
also house clinical and discovery research.
"As an innovator, I'm always looking for new ways to bring our facilities to life," says
Dr. Scott D. Boden, Chairman of Orthopaedics at Emory University School of Medicine
and Vice President of Business Innovation, Emory Healthcare. "When I first toured
a building with SageGlass, I knew I wanted to incorporate SageGlass into our smart
building designs at Emory Healthcare."
While smart glass has tangible sustainability benefits such as decreased energy
expenditures, the choice is also about the human benefits for Dr. Boden and the
Emory Healthcare design team. "The smart glass will afford us the freedom to omit
blinds and external shading from our design while having a fully adjustable amount of
shading for various settings," says Boden. "Studies have shown a correlation between
access to natural light and increased staff productivity. We have focused this advanced
technology on the spaces where our staff will spend large periods of time, so comfort is
paramount."
The Emory Musculoskeletal Institute is anticipated to be completed in the second
quarter of 2021.
