HCD Virtual taught us a lot, while confirming one

WE WRAPPED UP the first HCD Virtual confer-

ence (HCDVirtual.com) on Nov. 12, concluding four solid days of sessions conducted via
Zoom webinars. All told, it was 25 hours of education, featuring 127 speakers and offering a
boatload of CEUs for EDAC (17), AIA (33), and
IDCEC (25), many of which also qualify for
HSW credit. Hundreds of attendees participated, and they really participated, sticking
around and asking questions in every session.
It was a ton of stuff in a short period of time, but
the insights were excellent-and if you missed any of it, it's all available
on demand through the end of 2020.
Ah ... the end of 2020. Are we there yet?
I can admit that back in March, we all assumed we'd still be able to
meet up at the HCD Expo & Conference in Nashville in November. As
the summer wore on, and the time came to make the tough call to cancel
the live show, there was never a question that we'd do a virtual event.
We had more than 100 jury-approved sessions all lined up-we couldn't
just let them go to waste.
Jennifer Wilcox from The Center for Health Design, Jennifer Silvis,
and I culled through them all to come up with a good mix of topics that
were still highly relevant for the current reality. From there, the HCD
events team jumped into action. It was a mad race to get all the speakers
on board, develop the program, build the platform, and then launch and
manage a brand-new event in a couple of months.
We learned a lot in that respect, as well, and ultimately, HCD Virtual
was a success. We were able to deliver high-quality content, necessary
CEUs, and engaging dialog around important healthcare design topics.
There are definite advantages to virtual events: Sitting at our own desks,
everyone gets a front-row seat to the content. With on-demand viewing, all the other sessions are available to you, too. No waiting in too-long
Starbucks lines in the convention center! No aching feet!
But who am I kidding. I really missed seeing everyone in person-walking the show floor, strategizing with industry partners, sipping cocktails
with colleagues and old friends. I bet many of you missed that, too.
That's the thing we knew all along: A virtual event can't replace a live
one. And so we're glad to be turning our attention once again to HCD Expo
& Conference, looking forward to the 2021 show in Cleveland. It's scheduled for late October, so we're optimistic. And as we plan the details-including new protocols to keep everyone safe and healthy no matter the
scenario-we hope you're as excited as we are to get together again. 
