WELCOME TO OUR second annual Product Issue!

Once again, we're happy to be shining a spotlight on the products and suppliers that serve
the unique needs of the healthcare design
industry. And as we enter this new year with
the world still heavily under the shadow of
COVID-19, our focus on infection control products will come as no surprise.
It's our hope that as you learn more about the
thought processes behind product development, look at the products themselves, and peruse the Buyers Guide listings for your specific procurement needs, you'll
be that much more prepared to tackle your next project. But we also
know that it's just a start. There are myriad considerations when choosing interior and exterior finishes, materials, styles, and brands, beyond
what you can see and read about in a magazine.
I saw this firsthand at the 2019 HCD Expo in New Orleans, where I
walked around the exhibit hall before it opened to attendees, trailing
a group of jurors representing the show's Nightingale Awards for excellence in product design. I wrote about that experience in last year's
Products Issue, as a testament to the high standard that products in the
healthcare arena must meet. But it's worth mentioning again just how
involved the jurors were in evaluating the entries: they poked, prodded,
and manipulated. They stood on, sat on, tugged at, and scrutinized the
products they considered. It was, quite literally, a very hands-on judging
process-which is why we ultimately, regretfully, made the decision not
to hold the Nightingale Awards in 2020.
While we could have done a virtual version of the competition in conjunction with the HCD Virtual conference we held in November, we
couldn't get past that tangible element of physical interaction-without
it, the Nightingales just didn't feel right.
All of this is to say that we are really, really looking forward to convening in person again for HCD Expo 2021 in Cleveland, Ohio, Oct. 23-26.
(Knock on all the wood everywhere.) Not only because it means seeing all
your faces again, but for the opportunity to get your hands on the exciting
new products that have been in development and/or introduced since we
last met in 2019.
