Bone Grafting - What You Need to Know

In the majority of dental implant cases, there is
a need for bone grafting. Today, doctors can
use 3D imaging software to identify the right
candidates for implants and to determine the
appropriate bone graft procedures.
Identify the Right Candidates for Implants
The majority of patients are candidates for
dental implants, with some medical exceptions.
Patients who have had a recent myocardial
infarction, cardiovascular attack, cardiocerebrovascular attack, any type of heart valve
surgery, those with uncontrolled diabetes, as
well as patients who are immunocompromised,
are not good candidates for dental implants.
It's also wise to avoid these procedures on
anyone who abuses drugs or who is currently
taking IV bisphosphonates. Some patients
may come in having been told they're not a
candidate for implants because they don't
have enough height or width of bone. However,
in some cases, all they need is bone grafting.
The next aspect to look at is the patient's
intraoral health. If there's any active periodontal
disease, gross caries, any parafunctional habits,
you'll want to be able to take care of that for
them as well.
From there, evaluate where the bone is
and what the final restorations will be. You
have to look at both restorative-driven and
prosthetically-driven approaches. Get input
from your lab and your restorative dentist in
this process.
There are different types of bone grafts,
such as:
* Socket preservation
* Ridge augmentation
* Sinus lift

Leveraging 3D Imaging Software
CBCT imaging is a powerful tool for case
and treatment planning as well as for patient
acceptance. Once you have medically cleared
the patient, use CBCT imaging to show the
patient what's going on and to determine the
type of bone graft needed. You can grab the
3D image and manipulate it up and down,
sideways, and back and forth, and remove any
type of anatomy you don't want in there. You
can then position the implant in the right spot
and manipulate it in front of the patient. This
provides a true-to-life version of the implant
made by the manufacturer that pretty much
gets rid of any magnification errors and makes
for an accurate diagnosis. As new implants are
developed, they can be scanned and added in.
With a CBCT imaging system, you can see a
wide variety of views, including axial, coronal,
and sagittal. You can also see 3D images, and
customize these views based on the case and
specific needs. With this data, the doctor can:
