Procedure Face Masks (ASTM Low Barrier):

ASTM Low-Barrier Performance masks are the most popular masks worn in the healthcare setting. They provide (BFE) and fluid penetration resistance at a pressure of 80mm Hg. Wear for procedures where low amounts of fluid, spray, and/or airborne particles are produced.

Procedural Face Masks (ASTM Moderate Barrier):

ASTM Moderate-Barrier Performance masks provide increased protection. They provide submicron (PFE) and a moderate level of fluid penetration resistance at a pressure of 120mm Hg. Wear for procedures where moderate to light amounts of fluid, spray, and/or airborne particles are produced.

High-Barrier Masks (ASTM High Barrier):

ASTM High-Barrier Performance masks provide the highest level of protection. They have increased submicron (PFE) and the highest level of fluid penetration resistance at a pressure of 160mm Hg. These masks are often used by oral surgeons, periodontists and hygienists, as well for procedures where heavy to moderate amounts of fluid, spray, and/or airborne particles are produced.

Specialty Masks:

In addition to having an ASTM performance classification of low, moderate or high, these masks may have one or more additional benefits, e.g., masks designed for sensitive skin (tissue-lined masks), masks for clinicians who prefer a tie-on design rather than an ear-loop design (surgical tie-on masks), or masks for full-face protection (ear loop/eye shield combination masks).
