In an industry that hasn't stopped innovating or changing in the last
decade, there are countless matters competing for the attention
of every lab owner, manager, and technician; new technology,
advanced materials, and the continuing trend of labs merging,
acquiring one another, and consolidating.
In addition to all the changes that have occurred within the industry,
there are also outside factors at play. Customers' expectations have
been shaped by new experiences with online retailers and instant
access to communication and information afforded by internet
and digital technology. One of several themes that has emerged
is that dentists are expecting more-more communication about
cases, more accuracy in their restorations, and more value for
their money. While this is possible, the challenge is in harnessing
resources and channeling them the right way as well as preparing
for what may be around the corner, whether it's tomorrow, next
week, or next year, and acquiring another lab or being acquired
by another lab.
Inside and outside of the lab industry, change has become one of
the very few constants in the American business landscape. For
the last 50 years, nothing has remained the same. Change has
been accelerating at hyperspeed and the marketplace changes
almost daily. In order to better compete, companies are constantly

looking to boost efficiencies, reduce production costs, enhance
any market advantages through economies of scale, and capture
or otherwise secure their customer base.
Consolidation is only one symptom of the changes that we are
seeing today. Newly deregulated or privatized industries throughout
the world, such as energy, telecommunications, railroads, banking
and medical and dental insurance have consolidated to their
markets by building scale, protecting proprietary and innovative
ideas and products, and enhancing efficiencies on a global scale.
Start-ups in new markets, including biotechnology and online
retailing, are also experiencing the consolidation trend.

Joseph M. Saburn is a senior lawyer with broad experience in
domestic and international corporate law, Mergers and Acquisitions,
benefits, and executive compensation. He has substantial
experience providing: comprehensive corporate governance
and risk management counsel to public and private companies;
specialized expertise in Executive Compensation, ERISA, Mergers
and Acquisitions, employee benefit plans and programs, health
and welfare matters, and operational human resource issues;
and as well as Board of Director and Committee counsel support
related to such matters. He has extensive experience helping
companies develop coordinated employment, corporate, Mergers
and Acquisitions, compensation, and benefit strategies to better
manage their executive and employee issues.

Mr. Saburn has spoken frequently on these topics before numerous
trade and professional organizations, including the American Bar
Association, the ERISA Industry Committee, The Conference Board,
European Centre for Employee Ownership, and the International
Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans. He was formerly a partner
at Greenberg Traurig, Squire Sanders, as well as the Chief Counsel
- Executive Compensation and Benefits at Viacom, and the Lead
Human Resource Counsel at AT&T. Mr. Saburn has been quoted
in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Fox News, and
Crain's New York. He has appeared on Fox News, MSNBC, and
has been included in Who's Who in American Law. Mr. Saburn is
currently Managing Partner of Saburn Law Group LLC located in
