The Speech Reinforcement - Music Playback system
provides reinforcement of lectures or any other nondramatic speech activity occurring in any combination of
the three divisible areas. In addition, the system can be
used for reinforcing small music groups or soloists located
either on the platform lift or portable stage. As a Playback
System, provision has been made for single-channel reproduction of motion picture sound in each divisible area,
and for single-channel reproduction of monaural or stereophonic discs or tapes in each divisible area. Finally, recording of lectures of concerts in single- or dual-channel
modes are possible.
Low level microphone, high level motion picture, high
level portable music playback console input receptacles
are located for convenience and flexibility throughout the
space. Separate control equipment is provided for a
speech reinforcement control console, located in a small
room open to the space so that the reinforced sound may
be easily heard by an operator, permits operating up to
seven microphones simultaneously. Patching facilities
afford flexibility in interconnection of equipment. Portable music playback consoles, of which two are provided,
contain equipment for single-channel reproduction of monaural or two-channel discs or tapes. This equipment will
be normally operated by an instructor. In either mode,
reinforcement or music playback, the same loudspeaker
components shall be used. These loudspeakers are theatre-type, controlled directivity, exponential or radial
horns. Three identical clusters are used, one in each area,
speaking through openings in the upper control room catwalk projections.
The Sound Effects system provides for reproduction of
sound effects recorded on discs or on single or dualchannel magnetic tape, and for reproduction of "live" effects via microphones. In addition, facilities are provided
for recordi ng special effects tapes from other sou rces magnetic tape, discs or "live" microphones. The twochannel sound effects console, located in the lower control booth, ena!';lles its operator to mix two low level inputs per channel and direct either output channel to any
of six loudspeaker outlets. A pan-potentiometer may connect any source input to both outputs, permitting sound
to be faded gradually from one channel to the other. Portable loudspeakers shall be used for reproduction of sound
effects. Receptacles for these loudspeakers are located on
catwalks above the audience. The loudspeakers may be
used at these receptacles or, through extension cables,
elsewhere within the theatre."
In its first year of use, the auditorium has been scheduled to be used virtually all of the time, either for simultaneous activities in all of the sections (with the movable
walls closed) or for larger groups with two or three sections opened together. Sound isolation when the walls are
closed is entirely satisfactory. The acoustic quality in the
various space configurations is exceptionally clear. At first
this caused some difficulty for the college choral groups

because they could hear all of their mistakes so clearly;
however, their performance improved so much that it has
been commented upon when they have sung in concerts
away from the college.
The building is like an instrument, and it will require
practice and experience to allow it to reach its fullest
potential.
