and this space, although necessitating a spacer/filler when
securing the platforms together (see Figure 1), has served
as no ise insulation, preventing the unpleasant metal-tometal scraping or banging that might otherwise have
occurred. Occasionally, loose bolts cause a rattle under
the platforms, but an energetic technician armed with a
couple of wrenches can quickly solve that problem.
All is not a complete bed of roses, however. The platforms are heavy and more difficult to handle than wooden
platforms because the thin edges of the steel frame can
be very uncomfortable to technicians' hands - a discomfort which multiplies greatly when a large quantity of
platforms must be handled consecutively. Work gloves
only partially relieve the discomfort. In addition, the
relatively sharp edges of the platform sockets and posts
have a greater tendency to snag other platform tops
when they are being stacked for storage; and care must
be taken to insure against excessive damage from the
metal posts to any sort of stage surface.
The greatest difficulty we have had with the platforms probably could have been avoided by greater
foresight and attention to the initial cutting process.
The cutting of the Telespar tubing for the sockets and
posts was done by the suppl ier, and we did not foresee
the necessity of requesting that all of the cuts be made at
the same distance between the perforations. Since the
cuts did vary a great deal, we find in legging the platforms to a predetermined height, we have to deal with
height differences of almost an inch. These differences
are minimal, of course, and can be solved by placing
appropriate thickness shims under the offending legs;
however, if we had paid closer attention to the initial
cutting of the Telespar, this nuisance task could have been
reduced or even eliminated.
In ordering Telespar for future platform sockets and
posts, we will be careful to specify that all cuts be made
exactly halfway between the perforations on all pieces.
This will allow for exact matching of perforations in
legging to specified heights and should eliminate most
of the present necessity for shimming.
A few other precautions should be mentioned. First,
care should be taken to cut the slotted angle lengths
across the unporforated portions so that the weld joints
will be as solid as possible. Cuts made across the perforations reduce the metal-to-metal contact in welding and
thereby weaken the corner socket joints. Second, in setting up the platform system, technicians should be advised not to tighten the bolts too much. "Torque-freaks"
who apply excessive pressure in bolting can pull the
Telespar slightly out of square and make insertion and
removal of the posts difficult - not an impossible problem to correct, but annoying nevertheless.
Aside from these precautions, the system works well
with little or no mod ifications. Virtually any attachment
can be ea'sily bolted to either the Telespar posts or the
slotted angle sides - castor plates, dependent step units,
special-construction platforms, railings, etc. All in all, we
have been quite pleased with the new platforming system.
It has provided considerable savings in time required for

setting up and striking platforms, has reduced the amount
of required storage space, and, we predict, the high initial
cost will be more than offset in the long run by the durability and versatility of the units. In addition, the units
are strong, rigid, and, above all, extremely flexible in use.
With our present stock we are confident that we can
fully platform almost any type of show with only minimal additional construction - and that being only in the
case of small filler units or particularly odd-sized or oddshaped units. Over the past three years that confidence
in the system has been fully justified.
