SCENIC WAGON RESTRAINT SYSTEMS

A persistent problem for the scenic technician is rigidly anchoring temporary scenic wagons to adequately resist vibration imparted by the performers. One of the
most satisfactory solutions to appear has been the air
bearing. l Yet even this technique has limitations - it is
relatively costly; it requires a fairly smooth non-porous
stage floor; it requires that all platforms be connected to
the air supply by relatively large hoses; and normally it
is necessary to provide some means of isolating the air
compressor acoustically from the audience. The devices
to be described here, though technologically less sophisticated offer less demanding alternate means of achieving
to varying degrees both the stability and the mobility of
the air bearing. For want of a better term we have come
to call one group of these non-pneumatic mechanical
devices "caster jacks." Nonetheless, conceptually they
owe much to the air bearing - the success of both systems being dependent on the idea of transferring the
wagon weight from low friction bearings to rigid supports
wh ich are integral with the wagon frame.

EARLY PROTOTYPES
In an early form of the caster jack shown in Figure 1,

weight was transferred from the wagon frame to the caster
by means of the cam action of the lower portion of the
operating lever which projected through a slot in the platform. Though satisfactory in this case as the base of an 8'
high tower, the presence of a number of approximately
Y2" x 12" slots in a platform lid would not present a
usable playing surface in most applications. (Figure 2)
The necessity for the development of a more generally
useful version of the caster jack presented itself in an Indiana University production of A Flea in Her Ear by Georges Feydeau. Here scenic requirements were such that
an approximately 6'-8" diameter revolve had to be mounted flush in a wagon with an overall height of 6". Inasniuch
as there was no simple way to center, caster, and drive
such a revolve without mounting it on some sort of underhung subfloor, it was obvious that the only feasible way
to support such a structure under the weight of the performers in the space available was directly from the stage
floor. It then followed that it would be necessary to lift
these support points of the wagon free of the floor for
shifting. For this application the caster jacks seemed well
suited since a lifting motion of approximately W' to 5/8"
was intrinsic to the weight shifting process. The problem
of not obstructing the heavily used tread surfaces was
solved by using a series of long camshafts consisting of
ordinary 1.660" outside diameter (1 v.." N.P .S.) pipe
with protruding Y2" bolts acting as the cams. The camshafts were operated by levers at the offstage edges of the
