system unworkably cumbersome. Several types of demountable fasteners were investigated, but most were found to be
unreliable, costly, or unavailable in the required size. The
Rota-Lock seemed the obvious answer except, of course, that
it requires that the horizontal member cross behind the vertical. This difficulty was solved by the arrangement shown in
Figs. 6A, 6B, and 4. The basic idea involved replacing the
cross pipe of a conventional Rota-Lock joint with three demountable sections consisting of a short length of pipe to
which the load was fastened and into which sleeve inserts
were telescoped from the two ends of the pipe. Each sleeve
had a steel ring attached to it with a groove whose root diameter approximated that of the pipe. (To ease insertion, the rings
and, therefore, the grooves are made slightly undersize, but
the difference is easily taken up by the clamp screw and the
error is allowed for in the overall dimensioning of the rail.)
Thus, the short pipe section and the two rings supported on
the two coaxial sleeves made up a kind of surrogate cross
pipe that could be dissassembled and which would allow the
rail center to remain coincident with the stanchion axes, considerably improving both decorative and structural utility.
The pipe sleeve section is made short enough to allow the
yoke portion of the Rota-Lock to slip past it and allow the ring
sleeve assemblies to be inserted from each side. The grooves
eliminate any possibility of the Rota-Lock yoke slipping off the
rings. The pipe section is welded to an approximately 17/1
long piece of Binkley B-12 strut. This is then bolted to the

wood frame of the rail with eight %/1 x 1 'h/l flat head cap
screws. These costly fasteners were chosen to speed assembly. Notice that the insert sleeves extend 1 '/,6/1 outside the
grooved rings. The primary purpose of this was to assure the
installer that the sleeves were fully inserted-if they were not,
the sleeve extensions would make this obvious by sticking out
beyond the finish level of the rail sides (Figs. 6A, 6B, 7, 8, 9).
The rail frame itself was constructed of 'h/l ply with full
length 'h/l ply spacers between it and the B-12 strut core
pieces. The entire assembly was then covered on the bottom
and sides with %/1 rough-cut ply to suggest a solid beam with
ends notched to fit around the vertical pipe stanchions (Figs.
4, 10). The protruding tongues on the end of the rail mask
most of the Rota-Lock assembly. These are formed by the
layer of %/1 rough-cut ply which has a 2'h/l diameter, unmasked access hole for the adapter sleeves. A 'h/l diameter
steel pin is installed near the top center of each rail to simplify
lifting the rail into position (Fig. 3). Half the rail depth at each
end is notched back 5%/1 to allow nesting rail ends at various
angles (Figs. 4, 5, 6, 7).

Panels
The panels of rough-cut %/1 ply were cut down slightly from
their full 4' x 8' size to facilitate mounting them adjacent to
rails perpendicular to the plane of the panel. (See the left and
right rails just left of center in Fig. 2B). A workable com-
