SUBMISSION

Theatre Design & Technology is tbe journal of tbe Uniled States Institute for
Theatre Technology. II seeks 10 mainlain the highesl level of journalistic qualiry
throUghoUl. However, a special section is included whenever papers are availahle
which is designed 10 meel lhe traditionally rigorous slandards of scholarly publications wherein articles have been hlindly judged hy a jUf}' of academic peers. This
section will be committed to scholarly research, including histotical, critical, and
aesthetic srudies in all areas of theatrical design andlor technology (lighting, scenery,
sound, costume, makeup properties, and effects) and the area of lheatrical consultation regarding new facilities or the renovation or resroration of old facilities. All
rypes of manuscripts within the hroad areas above will be accepted, including
research reports, reviews of design activities, and papers related 10 usrrr concerns.
Papers are nOl restricted lO any particular methodology or approach.
REVIEW PROCESS: Papers ,viII be juried by a blind review process after initial
screening 10 eliminale papers clearly not up ro scholarly standards, papers nOl relevam 10 TD&T and papers for which the Institute cannOl provide a proper jUf}'. All
papers approved by the jury will be published; however decisions as lO when a
paper will be published will be in the hands of the EdilOr(s) of TD&T. All such
decisions will be final.

MEMBERSHIP

SUBSCRIPTION

WRITING

CRITERIA FOR JUDGING PAPERS: Juried papers will be evaluated for lheir
contribulion lO knowledge in lhese areas which will be evaluated according 10
slandards sel by the experr(s) on the jury panel. Papers will be eX'pected lO meel
high standards for clariry concise exposilory style, and good use of lhe English
language. Sryle, including end notes, must satisiy the standards of the Chicago
Manual of sryle.
HOW TO SUBMIT MANUSCRIPTS: Manuscripts must be sent to the usrrr
National Office. Five copies should be submitted. The original should be kept by the
author; no copies ,ViU be returned excepl in the case of papers sent back for revision.
Manuscripts should be 3,000-10,000 words long, exclusive of tables and references.
All manuscripts must be original and nOl under consideration by any Olher publisher. They should be written in active voice and employ non-sexist language.
MANUSCRIPT FORMAT: The tirle page (and only lhe tirle page) should include:
1. The tirle, author(s) corresponding address, lelephone number, and fax andlor email address, if appropriate.
2. A 50-70 word biography of the author.
3. A statement certifying thaI the paper is nOl under consideration by any olher
publishing entiry.
4. Certificalion lhat permission lO use any quolatinns or illusrrative material has
been granted lO the author.
The remaining pages, including lhose carrying lables andlor illustrations, should
contain no author identification. The lext, including the tirle, should begin on p 2.
wilh lhe remaining pages numbered consecutively. II should be primed doublespaced in at leasl 12-pr type in an easily readable fom (such as Times). ales and
references should immediately follow lhe MS.
TABLES AND ILLUSTRATIONS:
1. Allhough each copy submitted must include copies obll tables and illustrations,
only one set need include originals ready for reproduction; phOlocopies will be
adequate for lhe remainder. Olustrations and lables, each on a separate sheet,
should be clearl)' identified by their reference number.
2. Reference number, caption copy, and credits should be attached 10 the back. If
phOlographs are submitted, they should be high-eomrasl black and while 4 x 6
or larger. '0 writing or other marking on the backs should show lhrough on
the from. If the article is selected for publication, color transparencies may also
be submitted.
3. Locations of lables and illusrrarions should be indicted in the text by lheir reference number as: Insert here.
AUTHOR OTlFlCATIO : Papers will be judged acceprable, returned for revision, or rejecled. A brief Slalemem of reasons ,viII accompany returned papers.
AUlhor(s) ,viII be advised of the jurying schedule for lheir papers via the acknowledgment mailed upon receipl of lhe paper.
