part to the complexity of the programs, and much patience and dedication is required to achieve mastery. Such is the case with a CAD (computer-aided-design) program written for clothing pattern design called
Pattern mak81:

The "Home," version (3.03) of Patternlllakel' is priced at $I29
and is designed for classroom use and for advanced home pattern makers. The "Expert" version (3.13) sells for $1,199 and is intended for
professional designers and pattern makers, as well as teachers. All the
features of the Home version are included plus digitizer support which
allows users to make digital copies of existing paper patterns. The "Professional" version (3.53) is intended for commercial shops which need
such features as material usage and costing information. The price is
$2,499. Patternmaker Software also offers turnkey packages which include computer, software, digitiZing tablet and a printer or plotter.
All three version of Pattel'/lmakel' feature drawing, grading, basic
blocks, printing, and special libraries. The version I tested was a modified Expert version. I regret that I wasn't able to evaluate the digitizing capabilities of the program due to the fact that I didn't have access to a digitizing tablet.
The progranl is easy to install, the manual is clearly written and
there are eleven tutorials, each taking about an hour to accomplish. It
took me over two hours just to begin feeling comfortable using tlus CAD
application, but individuals who have some CAD background and/or who
love working with numbers will probably find the learning curve less
steep.
Once a sloper is drafted, the program will perform numerous functions such as adding a seam allowance, pattern marking, grading, etc.
Pieces can be layered for different sizes and they can be combined in "libraries" to store a complete garment. Pieces can be manipulated, shapes
altered, cuts n1.irrored, copied, and rotated. Notches, grainlines, and
other pattern marking symbols are easily added.
Printers supported include laser printers, the Hewlett Packard
Deskjet, and Epson compatible dot matrLx printers, but the recommended and sensible way to print large pattern pieces is with a pen piotter. Pattel'l11llakel' did print my basic back sloper to my little dot matrLx
printer, however it came out on eight pieces of paper which I had to align
and tediously paste back together.
Hardware requirements: Patlel'll1nakel' is a CAD program so it
needs a computer that can crunch numbers. Anything older than an IBM
386 with a math-coprocessor just won't do. Fortunately, most newish
computers are good number-crunchers. Your computer must be able to
run programs wlitten for Windows 3. I; a Macintosh PowerPC with a
Windows emulator will also work. 4MB RAM is a nUnimum, as is almost
2MB disk space. If you want to take full advantage of the Expert or Professional models, you will need a digitizing tablet and a plotter.
All in all, Pattel'111nakel' can be a powerful aid to costume production. A demo version is available ($9.95 for shipping/handling) if you
want to give it a try before comnutting your shop to making patterns the
computel~age way.

Visual CADD 1.2 for Windows
Theatre artists have utilized computer-assisted design techniques since
AutoCAD entered the market in 1982. Prior to that date, architects and
engineers pioneered the use of complex computer design programs on
expensive workstations. Now it seems that nearly every scenograpluc studio has a computer running a CAD program. In the acadenuc community, design faculty are busy converting classrooms from drafting tables
with T-squares and scale rules to fully-equipped computer labs. Students
use the term "CAD-it" to describe a quick method of drafting. The questions concerning CAD computing are no longer technological or aesthetic but econon1.ic. Theatre practitioners with tight budgets are faced
with the prospect of spending' 3,000 for the latest CAD implementation
or even more for a multiple site license.
AutoCAD has long dominated the market devouring even lower~
priced competitors such as the popular Generic CADD. Now Numera
Software Corporation, founded by members of the original Generic
CADD development team, has defined a new "ultra-value" market segment with the release of Visual CADD v. 1.2 for Windows, a reasonably
priced two-dimensional CAD package. Its suggested retail price is $495,
wluch places it between the higher-priced induslI)' standard AutoCAD
and the lower~priced, !.in1.ited-feature, retail CAD packages such as
llJrboCAD and Drafix.
The mirumum system requirements are a 386SX computer running
Windows 3.1 or later with at least 4MB of RAM and 15MB of free disk
space for the program files. Visual CADD comes with excellent documentation including separate booklets for getting started, reference manual,
tutOlial and a fold-out card with all the commands. The program comes
on four 3.5" floppies and was very easy to install in its own program
group. We tested the software in our design lab on Pentiums witll students who had just finished a semester designing with AutoCAD for Windows. Although they lamented the lack of 3-D capability, the general impression was favorable and several features were singled out for praise.
Visual CADD will read and write DWG and DXF file formats, although one
of the students reported that files saved in AutoCAD's DWG format are sLx
to ten times larger than when they are saved in VisualCADD's own format.
Another student experienced application errors when dealing with
AutoCAD files, but this is a common occurrence even with DrafixCAD and
drawings saved under earlier AutoCAD implementations. Nevertheless, I
loaded an AutoCAD-generated groundplan and made some modifications
without difficulty.
AnlOng the many helpful features that make Visual CADD easy to use
are: 1. context-sensitive command lists that pop up in the n1.idst of any
process with the click of the right mouse button; 2. speed bars that display properties depending upon what you are doing (e.g. if you are
drawing a line, the speed bar displays buttons for changing the layer,
color, line type and line width); 3. the "Match Entity" command that allows you to make something sinillar to sometlung else you've already
created in terms of its attributes (e.g. if you click on a red circle as tile
existing object and then draw a line, Visual CADD will match the appropriate attributes like color, line type, line width and layer); 4. the layer
manager that displays information about what each layer contains and
allows nanling and/or numbering of different layers.
Experienced users will also find convenient functions at the click of
a mouse button. Visual CADD allows the advanced user to customize the
software by creating scripts which are invoked by two- and three-letter
command shortcuts. Visu~tI CADD's script function is vel)' similar to the
