Director Lynda Linford emphasized the effect war, and the strategies of war, have on life. Merteuil's strategies and games kept everyone under lock and key while playing with the physical creature comforts that deceit and decadence allows. The lighting idea supports the art of strategy and gaming through the use of indirect light and projections bouncing off the prominent ceiling and draping of the set. Characters become pieces on a game board through the collaboration of the costume design and lighting directly through the floor. top top of Act II middle top of Act I bottom fencing scene (production photos by Donna Barry) 38 S P R I N G 2 0 0 2 TD & T
