The international recognition and prestige of the USITT Architecture Awards continued in 2004 with both of the top Honor Awards presented to projects from outside the United States. Out of thirty-four submissions, there were seven projects selected for recognition. These ranged from historic renovation to facilities housing new forms of theatre, showcasing the amazing and diverse world of theatre design around the globe. This years Honor Award winners included the renovation of the Brighton Corn Exchange in East Sussex England. Formerly a royal stable and horse riding arena within the Brighton Dome, it has been transformed into a flexible venue for multiple uses. The other Honor Award winner was the New Tempodrom in Berlin, a facility with multiple innovative theatre spaces, including a water theatre and the primary presentation space modeled on a circus tent that was the home of the theatre company on the site before the new building was created. The five Merit Award winners include Zankel Hall, a recital hall created by carving space from the basement beneath Carnegie Hall in New York City.
