In

each issue of TD&T I get to work with some old friends but also
with people I've never met before. This constant stream of new voices is
what keeps my job so interesting, and their stories give TD&T an everchanging freshness that you don't find in most other arts periodicals.
Paul Court (four previous articles) tells the story of how, after fortyfive years of alternating hopes and disappointments, the Four Seasons
Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto is about to proudly become
Canada's first dedicated full-scale opera house.
Loren Schreiber (three previous articles) and Matt McKinney (new)
report on their research, partially funded by a grant from USITT, into the feasibility of using a technique they call reverse peristaltic motion control for theatre automation. (Their article is easier
and more fun to read than my sentence describing it.)
Deborah Bell (one previous article) discusses why masks are such a persistent part of theatre-and religion-and gives us a wonderful peek inside the studios and the creative minds of
sixteen mask makers from around the world.
Steve Zapytowski (one previous article) writes about the plethora of digital tools and processes available to theatrical designers and suggests that using them in a combined way results in
greater artistic control.
Kade Mendelowitz (new) shares his clever solution to the problem of controlling the required
rain effect for the famous dance number in Singin' in the Rain.
Kristina Tollefson (new, sort of: she's previously written book reviews for TD&T) also devised
a clever technical solution to the problem of creating comfortable and easy-to-maintain wigs for
the full cast of The Mikado.
And finallly, Rick Stephens (thirteen previous articles) interviews Doug Taylor who is responsible for creating the USITT archives. In doing so, Doug preserved primary source materials without which Rick, and future scholars, could not write accurately and authoritatively about the
Institute as Rick has been doing in his award-winning series, "Lore and Legends in USITT History."
Mea culpa. I make my share of mistakes, but it's very embarrassing to admit that I made a mistake in the correction note I wrote at the end of this column in the last issue. It was a typo, but that's
no excuse. So here's the correction to the correction: ETC Source Fours are currently available with
lenses that produce the following field angles: 5°, 10°, 19°, 26°, 36°, and 50°.
I want to extend a special thanks to Elizabeth Lewandowski for serving as book review editor
during 2004. Under her leadership, we published eleven book reviews, including one which ranks
among the best ever published in this journal. Please see page 75 for a short introduction to our
new book review editor, Arnnold Wengrow.
