parade birds and the of by rebecca cunnungham Hopi bird and German Goth witch The many students attending PQ had been encouraged to bring to Prague materials and pieces to build costumes in the PQ workshops, or bring full costumes, to wear in the parade. The theme for the Scenofest activities was The Birds, loosely based on the play by Aristophanes. The goal of the workshops and this parade event was to develop multicultural exchanges among students, and to create art designed Canan Goknil of Turkey to encourage peace and understanding. Working with Sodja Lotker of the Theatre Institute in Prague, the organization that produces the PQ every four years, Laura Crow, head of the OISTAT Costume Working Group, was the organizer of the Parade of Birds and its associated workshops. Crow recruited a band of designers from around the world to run the workshops, and Rebecca Cunningham sought out U.S. donors for workshop materials. They found helpers from the Costume Commission of USITT and the Costume Working Group of OISTAT to hand carry to Prague fifteen extra suitcases filled with materials and donated tools.
