IN FABRIC HISTORY CLASS TECHNIQUES USED THEATRE 76 To recreate lace, students attach a paper pattern to the underside of a thin frame and cover the top with tulle, organdy, or other base. Then they fill a small parchment cone with a faux lace component. If the lace is to be white, the cone is filled with white silicon window caulk. Then, like cake decorators, they squeeze the caulk through a tiny hole at the bottom of the cone. For colored lace, the cone is filled with a mixture of artist's oil paint and liquid bandage mixed in a ratio of one part liquid bandage to nine parts oil paint. (Liquid bandage is available in the U.S. under trade names such as New Skin and Skin Shield.) Notice that the net base fabric has been trimmed from the outside edges of the lace pattern. This embroidery, created in much the same way as lace, shows an intricate pattern on cheesecloth. This appliqué uses string and dyepainted fabric on nylon net. DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY SPRING 2007
