Location: London, United Kingdom Architect: Keith Williams Architects Theatre Consultant: Theatre Projects Consultants Acoustician: Arup Acoustics Opened: November 2005 Estimated Cost of Construction: £ 10 million MERIT * award The Unicorn Theatre is a professional company dedicated to producing high-standard work for children. Their new center gives them two spaces in which to do that: an educational space, and a café. The Weston Theatre seats 300, while the smaller Clore Theatre seats 120. The design concept is simplistic and urban. The theatres are designed intimately and "spirited" to engage the young patrons. The jury continually used the word "elegant" to describe this facility, both in terms of site planning and within the building. "The handsome new bulding does an excellent job of anchoring its corner site and announcing its public nature with a tall, glazed lobby. The theatre itself has a simple form and plan that brings the audience close to the action." ❖ THEATRE 66 DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY SUMMER 2007 The Unicorn Theatre
