Harriett lake's eccentrically elegant individualism can best be described by her relationship with her dresses, gowns, and suits. For her, clothes are not merely decorative, but are an organic part of her nature, an expression of her rich and generous personality. The frightening dreams she had as a newlywed living in a small house in Miami beach with her new husband Hy were the impetus for one of their first moves. Her clothes, stuffed into a too small closet, called out to her in her dreams sobbing and gasping for air because they could not breathe. Mr. lake had no choice but to build her a roomier closet. v Kristina Tollefson is Associate Chair and Resident Costume/Makeup Designer at the University of Central Florida.
