amount of stage weights to keep it from being lifted.
Figure 3 is a view that adds in the second lifting cable. This
cable runs parallel to the path of the first one and is shown as
a longer dashed line.
In figure 4, the horizontal travel cable is added. This is a
simple traveler rig that moves the sheave carriers as needed.
The system rigging resolves all horizontal forces internally
and would ideally work without any horizontal support, but
there is a significant tension in the lines running along the track
which exerts considerable compressive force on what is in effect a very long, slender column. To prevent problems with this
setup, the track is tensioned by attaching it to the building on
the left and right sides.
Finally, a pair of weights was added to the lifting cables
where they met the flown element. The weights were constructed by taking a length of pipe and a pair of pipe caps that were
drilled to allow the cable to pass through. After being filled
with lead shot, they had enough weight to keep the ends of the
horizontal-run cables from being pulled out of reach when the
system was unloaded.

Functionality and Cost
The system worked throughout the run of the show with no
major mishaps and it had more than enough working capacity
to move the objects in this production.
Overall, this was a fairly expensive project. The UNI-

BEAM and carriers cost about $4,000, the sheaves were almost
$1,000, and the cable another $500. On top of that was the cost
of hardware and steel, bringing the total to about $6,000 for
the project.

Relationships and Design Guidelines
* The weight of the arbor and counterweight should be
equal to the weight of the heaviest item to be flown, plus
the weight of the cable weights. (If the system will never
be fully unloaded, the sum of the heaviest and lightest
items to be flown will allow a somewhat larger capacity.)
* The maximum tension in any of the cables is ideally half
of the maximum weight to be flown. If the two lift cables
take an unequal share of the load, then the one under
more tension will be the maximum in the system.
* The maximum downward force on the head block and
upward force on the muling block is twice the maximum
weight being flown.
* The end-to-end compressive force on the track is twice
the weight of the item being flown. This will need to be
balanced by tension on the ends of the track of at least
that amount.
* Ideally there should be no static horizontal forces exerted
on the system supports. When the system is in motion
there will be some vibration and horizontal forces, and
sufficient bracing should be added to account for them.
