option because it was too late in the process for it to be worth the manual labor
involved in setting it up. " Additionally,
some parts of the show (like the opening
ritual) were unscripted so it wouldn't be
possible to finalize the captions ahead of
time. Instead, copies of the script were
provided for those who needed them.
Lastly, an issue that seemed to be innate to Zoom was video quality. After testing several different options to see where
the video lost the most quality, technical staff determined that compressing
streamed video was a functionality embedded within Zoom to decrease bandwidth. There was nothing more to do
other than accept the fuzzy video quality
Zoom outputted.

Zoom Rehearsal Fatigue

The many hours of rehearsal can be taxing for student performers during normal
productions. On Zoom it was worse. Due
to the pandemic, students were already
on Zoom in classes all day, and then
they were in rehearsals for the majority
of their night. The amount of time spent
on the computer became very taxing, and
both cast and crew felt that the rehearsal
community, which usually keeps them energized, was lacking in this format. " One

of the things I miss most about in-person
rehearsals is the chance to chat with your
neighbor during a break, " says Saletan.
" Those 10 minutes to grab a snack and
stretch my legs were invaluable, but I was
very aware of the fact that I was alone. "
Even though the Zoom chat function was enabled, some felt this to be
more isolating than community-building.
Private messaging on chat created a certain level of exclusion that wouldn't occur in a regular rehearsal space. Others,
however, argued for the chat function as
they liked the ability to use it to express
their support, opinions, and comments
without taking up space in the rehearsal.
Blocking and choreography also became harder for the performers in the
virtual space, especially since the devised
script was not finished before the rehearsal process began. One technical issue
discovered were the different mirroring
settings that each person had in Zoom
and OBS. This meant that " stage right "
and " stage left " had to be redefined if the
directors were going to be able to translate the movements they wanted to see.
It was also a problem for lighting design
and set up. These challenges were solved
by having each performer's settings individually set in both OBS and Zoom and

checked before each rehearsal and show.
Kaitlyn Khayat, the stage manager, made
it a part of her nightly checklist to have
everyone raise their right hand to make
sure that they appeared to be raising the
same hand on screen. A similar process
was also key to standardizing settings for
sound and video quality.
Remembering blocking was also an issue. The virtual platform and unfinished
script for rehearsals was jarring for performers who still had to remember the
same amount of blocking as they would
in a normal performance. Though some
performers eventually spiked their own
rooms, taking notes in such a way that
they could be remembered proved challenging. Saletan mentioned that even taking notes in her notebook wasn't enough
for her to remember what she needed to
do in each scene. After the show, Khayat
also said she wished that she'd taken
clearer and more detailed blocking notes
for the performers.
Choreography also had to be adjusted
throughout the piece as the technology
changed, which added another concern
to the rehearsal docket and created one
more thing for the performers to remember. The changing choreography and technology left little time for reviewing, too.
