IN BRIEF Woodstock, Ontario-based Contrans Group Inc. has acquired the operating assets and real property of Guelph, Ontario-based trucking business Best Transfer in a deal for which financial terms were not disclosed. XPO Logistics Inc. has agreed to acquire for $87 million in cash the NLM Web-based expediter unit of Landstar System Inc. The G6 Alliance member lines - APL Ltd., Hapag-Lloyd, Hyundai Merchant Marine, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, NYK Line and Orient Overseas Container Line - plan to extend their trans-Pacific trade coverage to include the U.S. West Coast by mid2014. Hapag-Lloyd and CSAV have begun discussion of a possible merger. Also, Hapag-Lloyd has revised its Gulf Caribbean Service to include eastbound and westbound calls at Santo Tomas de Castilla, Guatemala; Puerto Cortes, Honduras; Puerto Limon, Costa Rica; Manzanillo, Panama; and Cartagena, Colombia, with the mainland U.S. call continuing to be at Port of Houston Authority facilities. Bermuda Container Line Ltd. is moving its U.S. port calls to the Packer Avenue Marine Terminal in South Philadelphia from Elizabeth, N.J. CSX Corp. and TerraPointe Services have welcomed countertop maker Caesarstone Sdot-Yam Ltd. as the first tenant of the Belfast Commerce Centre in Richmond Hill, Ga. In addition, UP's Response Management Communications Center has earned accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. BNSF Railway Co. has completed the $46 million Plattsmouth Bridge, which crosses the Missouri River between Plattsmouth, Neb., and Pacific Junction, Iowa, along its main line between Lincoln, Neb., and Chicago. Canadian National Railway Co. has announced a $10 million program for acquisition of additional equipment for monitoring train wheels and rail. UPS Inc. has unveiled plans to spend $80 million to expand its facility near Memphis International Airport. Crowley Maritime Corp. has added 537 new 40-foot, high-cube refrigerated cargo containers to its fleet, while retiring 337 older units Also, Crowley has continued its Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarships program with awards to two University of North Florida students, two Webb Institute students and two U.S. Merchant Marine Academy cadets. Terex Port Solutions has received several orders for dieselelectric-powered straddle carriers, including from South African logistics group Transnet SOC Ltd., Belgian terminal operator PSA Antwerp NV and Belgian terminal operator MSC Home Terminal. Cargotec Corp. unit Kalmar has received an order from DP World to deliver seven empty container handlers to Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Tideworks Technology Inc. has deployed its trademarked Mainsail Vanguard terminal operating system at the Batumi International Container Terminal in Adjara, Georgia, on the Black Sea. The Cleveland-based Benesch law firm has been named Law Firm of the Year in Transportation Law by U.S. News & World Report.
