Silver Kingpin Award Ballots Due June 30 The voting period for the 2015 Silver Kingpin recipient ends June 30. IANA voting members were sent ballots electronically on June 1. The Silver Kingpin Award will be presented on September 21, during Intermodal EXPO 2015, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Spring Business Meeting Focuses on Industry Solutions Now in its 21st year, IANA's spring gathering brought together more than 400 industry leaders for two days of facilities tours, roundtable discussions, an intermodal supplier showcase and networking reception, a general educational session and committee meetings. The event began for many with a May 5 golf outing. The establishment of task forces - including one focusing on improving terminal turn times for truckers - was a positive outcome of IANA's Intermodal Operations and Maintenance Business Meeting. Held May 6-7 in Oak Brook, Ill., the event also offered a new and expanded format allowing for greater discussion. UPS, BNSF Facilities Get First-hand Look Tours held May 6 gave attendees an opportunity to see the partnership between the UPS Chicago Area Consolidation Hub and one of the BNSF Railway Co.'s Chicago intermodal facilities. The 240-acre UPS operation, located in the Chicago southwest suburbs of Hodgkins and Willow Springs, is the world's largest ground package sorting IANA Launches Webpage for Scholarship Program IANA has recently launched a new section of its website designed to promote the activities of its Scholarship Program. Over the past eight years, the association has awarded more than $1.2 million to promote and support students entering the intermodal industry. The four undergraduate schools who have been awarded scholarship funds are the University of Maryland, the University of North Florida, the University of North Texas and the University of Wisconsin-Superior. The Transportation Institute at the University of Denver is the only graduate degree awardee. Intermodal EXPO 2015 to Offer Robust Educational Agenda Carriers, transport intermediaries, suppliers and beneficial cargo owners will all find content geared to their business at Intermodal EXPO 2015, including eleven concurrent sessions and eight dialogue box roundtable discussions. Each day is scheduled to begin with an opening general session, moderated by William A. "Bill" Strauss, senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, whose perspective on the U.S. economy is relevant to anyone in the intermodal industry. The concurrent programming that follows, developed with education co-sponsors Transportation Intermediaries Association and FTR, falls into three tracks: * Intermodal sales and service; * Intermodal operations; and * Intermodal economics and environment. Across the larger sessions, new mobile-app-based functionality will allow for increased interaction with the audience. Dialogue box discussions will again employ the small-scale format that was successful when launched at Intermodal EXPO 2014. Facility tours and the Annual Student Competition round out the event's educational experience. Host sponsors Florida East Coast Railway and Port Everglades are to offer a tour of the Intermodal Container Transfer Facility on which the two companies have partnered. Intermodal EXPO 2015 will be held Sept. 20-22 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The early bird registration deadline is July 1.
