SUSTAINABILITY - from page 11 America for a third straight year. The DJSI follows a best-in-class approach, surveying sustainability leaders from each industry on a global and regional level. The annual review of the DJSI family is based on a thorough analysis of economic, environmental and social performance, assessing issues such as corporate governance, risk management, branding, climate change mitigation, supply chain standards and labor practices, CN noted. "CN has a long-term commitment to sustainable practices, and we are honored that the DJSI has recognized CN as a leader in the area again this year," said Claude Mongeau, president and chief executive officer of CN. "CN is achieving significant freight train fuel efficiencies and sustainability gains and delivering cost-effective transportation services through a series of strategic initiatives, including the acquisition of modern locomotives, new technology applications to existing locomotives, enhanced analytic abilities, and employee training," Mongeau continued. "We are particularly excited about our leading-edge work to set fuel efficiency targets for specific trains by route and to monitor train performance against these goals." CN claims leadership in the North American rail industry in fuel efficiency, consuming, overall, approximately 10% less fuel per gross-ton-mile than the rail industry average. Port News Charleston Harbor Deepening Approved The Charleston Harbor received the final substantive approval required for its 52-foot harbor deepening project to progress through construction. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Chief's report outlines the recommendation of deepening the Charleston Harbor channel to 52 feet and entrance channel to 54 feet, as well as enlarging turning basins to accommodate for post-Panamax vessels calling at South Carolina Port Authority's container terminals. The report moves to the Office of Management and Budget for review and then to Congress. Approval is expected early in 2016. "Receipt of the Chief's Report is tremendous news for SCPA," said Jim Newsome, South Carolina Ports Authority's president and CEO. "By the end of the decade, we will achieve 52 feet of depth and Charleston will be the deepest harbor on the East Coast. This depth advantage will provide our customers with 24-hour access to deepwater, a requirement for significant long-term volume growth in today's big-ship environment." In other news, SCPA reported it generates $6.3 billion in annual economic activity in the Lowcountry region and $53 billion statewide. The figures come from a study completed by Joseph Von Nessen, a research economist in the University of South Carolina's Darla Port News - continued on page 15 October 2015 | Intermodal Insights 13 http://www.cornerstone-systems.com
