Freight Reports Truck Tonnage Increases Despite Inventories American Trucking Associations' advanced seasonally adjusted ForHire Truck Tonnage Index increased 1.9 percent in October, following a decrease of 0.7 percent on revised September numbers. The October index equaled 135.7, based on ATA's convention of 2000 = 100, up from 133.1 in September, and just below the all-time high of 135.8 reached in January 2015. Compared with October 2014, the index increased two percent, which was above the year-over-year increase of 1.6% in September. Year-to-date through October, compared with the same period last year, tonnage was down 3.0 percent. "It was good to see tonnage increase nicely in October after contracting a total of 1.6% in August and September" said ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello. "However, tonnage has been overall pretty flat this year, as October's reading is just shy of January's level. high level of inventories throughout the supply chain. A 2.7 percent rise in international shipments helped offset an 18.6 percent drop in trailers for an overall 1.7 increase in total volumes. Total intermodal traffic, on a year-over-year basis, grew 3.1 percent through November. While trailers remain in negative territory, domestic containers are up 5.0 percent and international loads have climbed 3.2 percent.
