Truck Tonnage Increases
Despite Inventories
American Trucking Associations'
advanced seasonally adjusted ForHire Truck Tonnage Index increased
1.9 percent in October, following a
decrease of 0.7 percent on revised
September numbers.
The October index equaled 135.7,
based on ATA's convention of 2000 =

just below the all-time high of 135.8
reached in January 2015. Compared
with October 2014, the index increased
two percent, which was above the
year-over-year increase of 1.6% in
September.
Year-to-date through October,
compared with the same period last
year, tonnage was down 3.0 percent.
"It was good to see tonnage
increase nicely in October after
contracting a total of 1.6% in August
and September" said ATA Chief
Economist Bob Costello. "However,
tonnage has been overall pretty flat this
year, as October's reading is just shy of
January's level.

This will have a negative impact on
truck freight volumes over the next few
months," he said.

months, I remain concerned about the
Domestic containers again led
monthly intermodal volume growth in

than in November 2014. A 2.7 percent
rise in international shipments helped
offset an 18.6 percent drop in trailers for an overall 1.7 increase in total
volumes.
Total intermodal traffic, on a
year-over-year basis, grew 3.1 percent
through November. While trailers
remain in negative territory, domestic containers are up 5.0 percent and
international loads have climbed 3.2
