Hertwig - from page 9 are able to know exactly where their units are when they come into some of the facilities. I think the more that we can share information among the various modes, the more it helps the entire supply chain improve. FEC has recently launched its EZ Buy product where people can go on the web, choose a train service, get a price quote, and even negotiate the quote at that time. Again, the more we can advance the technology, I think the better off we'll be, especially if we share that information. For the truckload brokers across the country, this is what they like about many of the truckload companies, that they have these types of systems. I think many of the railroads have learned from people that have come in with trucking backgrounds. The majority of my career, other than the six years at Florida East Coast and six years at CSX, was spent on the motor carrier side. Insights: Where are the best opportunities for intermodal growth? What is the future for short-haul intermodal? Hertwig: If you look at products moving internationally, more railroads are getting into running shorter lengths of haul. There is still a misperception out there that you have to [move loads] 750 to 1,000 miles to make intermo- dal really work. I don't agree with that. I think that you can lower that mileage factor down. We have a 351-mile railroad, and some of our length of haul is 150 miles. But, when you're running shorter lengths of haul, one thing that you have to do is have more frequent schedules. We combine some of the carload business with the intermodal, and we just run trains. If you're going to compete with truck you can't just run one or two schedules a day between two origins and destinations. Many times you've got to run multiple trains to allow the flexibility of those truckers or shippers to make various cut offs. That enables them to increase their usage of intermodal - at least that's what we've found in south Florida. Insights: What have been the keys to FEC's success? Hertwig: We've opened up a lot of good markets with both the eastern railroads - the Norfolk Southern and CSX. We provide second-morning service to and from Atlanta and to and from the Charlotte, North Carolina area. Those are nice lengths of haul and compete head on with trucks in those markets with two-day service. Unless you're running team drivers, and you know there aren't a lot of team drivers out there anymore, you're not going to get any better than second-morning service in those Hertwig - continued on page 13 September 2016 | Intermodal Insights 11
