Suppliers, Carriers Intensify
Chassis Utilization to Aid
Productivity
I
n an intermodal environment where demand to improve productivity is constant,
suppliers and carriers alike are focusing on improving chassis utilization, with an
accent on advancing technology solutions.
The evolution away from ocean carrier-provided chassis has
dominated the industry's product roadmap for several years, said
Dennis Lane, vice president of sales and marketing at Trinium
Technologies.
"It's a big paradigm shift," he said, forcing suppliers to provide
business intelligence that provides more timely and accurate
data, which is becoming more prevalent in the drayage market. The result is improved decision-making by customers and
carriers alike as they gain real-time access through information
transmitted by mobile phone, tablet or personal computer.
Jason Anderson, general manager of Chassis Finder, agreed.
"The chassis market is always going to be adjusting to conditions, it just happens to be more fluid than in the past."
The latest adjustments include shifting container trade
patterns, adapting to ocean carriers' individual equipment usage
rules and coping with equipment shortages, Anderson told
Intermodal Insights. At the same time, drayage carriers have
to seek the right blend of utilization improvements and weigh
purchase versus lease options to cope with rising demand.
The evolving intermodal market, particularly for international
cargo, has fostered a wide range of innovations to help customers'
chassis utilization. Several company representatives told Insights
the spread of GPS tracking and other technology solutions
for improving asset management has created significant
improvements, and should deliver even greater benefits as
adoption increases.
Affordable Technology
Lane said the advent of more affordable technology, such as
integrating GPS information into a transportation management
system, or TMS, is helping. Smaller drayage companies particularly benefit from the ability to use more affordable technology
for services such as automating chassis rental fees, payables
and invoices.
